There was a man who considered himself the most handsome gentleman in London.

He could hardly walk about his fine mansion without stopping to admire himself in one of the many mirrors that adorned his walls. Like Narcissus he would be frozen to the spot for hours at a time, enthralled at his own features.

The gentleman however was of a young age and, being so, recognized with age the looks he took such pleasure from now would someday recede.
These thoughts disturbed his mind, plagued his sleep and put him into great despair. How he cursed time. The endless passing of day and night, the mocking of the ticking clock. They sought to steal that he valued most, with a cruel and ceaseless attrition.

Angst, turned to a fit of depression. He took to endlessly pacing his empty home, inconsolable to what few friends still cared, who visited in hopeless attempts to provide cheer.

In silent contemplation, he leaned over a high balcony and considered the height of the fall. He whispered to himself ‘I would give all I have, if I could stop the cruel passage of time. If only I could retain that which gives me joy. Alas, I cannot fight nature. Now onto another place’.

Portrait of a Gentleman
I am so very lovely, just look at me you awful little people
I have fashioned a mirror, within which I have captured your image as you are now. Should you place this mirror where none may see, you shall age no more. All I ask for in ret-’.

The stranger’s speech halted abruptly as he spotted the events unfolding before him.

Having lifted a hand to his head in shock, the vain gentleman, so greatly startled and dizzy at what he perceived as an evil spirit in his presence, lost his balance on the balcony and plunged to an untimely end.

‘Great. That’s just great’, Satan said, looking down on his prey. ‘Didn’t see that coming at all. Waste of a good mirror too. The work those demons put into this. Will they ever be upset. Maybe I should extend my retreat at the Vatican until things calm down a bit’.

The Legend of the Starfish

Posted by Argentum Vulgaris

"A vacationing businessman was walking along a beach when he saw a young boy. Along the shore were many starfish that had been washed up by the tide and were sure to die before the tide returned. The boy was walking slowly along the shore and occasionally reached down and tossed the beached starfish back into the ocean.

The businessman, hoping to teach the boy a little lesson in common sense, walked up to the boy and said, “I have been watching what you are doing, son. You have a good heart, and I know you mean well, but do you realize how many beaches there are around here and how many starfish are dying on every beach every day. Surely such an industrious and kind hearted boy such as yourself could find something better to do with your time. Do you really think that what you are doing is going to make a difference?”

The boy looked up at the man, and then he looked down at a starfish by his feet. He picked up the starfish, and as he gently tossed it back into the ocean, he said, “It makes a difference to that one.”

Growing inequality, environmental decline and "teetering" economies mean the world must change the way it does business.

Health and education must improve, it says. Subsidies on fossil fuels should end, and governments must look beyond the standard economic indicator of GDP.

Promicuous Women

Posted by Argentum Vulgaris

Are Women Who Have Had Five or More Partners Promiscuous?

How many partners must a woman have had for men to consider her promiscuous?

Are women who have had five or more partners promiscuous? They are according to AskMen’s Great American Male Survey–an even lower threshold than last year.

Remember how last year we were horrified when 41% of American men surveyed by AskMen said that women become sexually promiscuous after sleeping with 10 men — which at the time was the lowest possible option?
The results of the 2010 survey broke down like this:

At What Point Does A Woman Become Sexually Promiscuous?

Never? 14%
When she sleeps with her 10th partner? 41%
When she sleeps with her 20th partner? 34%
When she sleeps with her 50th partner? 14%
When she sleeps with her 100th partner? 3%

Well, this year, AskMen changed the survey, adding a lower option: When she sleeps with her 5th partner. And, would you believe it, given the lower option, the men surveyed voted that that was actually the tipping point into promiscuity.

What a lot of tripe.

Question One: Who cares?

If you care then you have a problem, deal with it.

Question Two:  How many women have you slept with? Does that make you a big man? Does that make you promiscuous?

Raises the age old problem, "a man who sleeps around is sowing his wild oats, while a woman is a slut."

Bloody puritans and their double standards!

Some women enjoy sex and why shouldn't they? Let them enjoy it, just the same as men enjoy sex.

It's hard to believe in this day and age that we still let the Bible into the bedroom.

Civilisation

Posted by Argentum Vulgaris

“Before our white brothers came to civilize us we had no jails. Therefore we had no criminals. You can’t have criminals without a jail. We had no locks or keys, and so we had no thieves. If a man was so poor that he had no horse, tipi or blanket, someone gave him these things. We were too uncivilized to set much value on personal belongings. We wanted to have things only in order to give them away. We had no money, and therefore a man’s worth couldn’t be measured by it. We valued the exchange of love, so we did not deal in fear. We had no written law, no attorney or politicians, therefore we couldn’t cheat. We were in a really bad way before the white man came, and I don’t know how we managed to get along for millenniums without the basic things which, we are told, are absolutely necessary to make a current civilized society.”

7 Wonders of the World by a Child

Posted by Argentum Vulgaris

Some students were asked to list what they thought were the present “Seven Wonders of the World.” Though there were some disagreements, the following received the most votes:

1. Egypt’s Great Pyramids
2. Taj Mahal
3. Grand Canyon
4. Panama Canal
5. Empire State Building
6. St. Peter’s Basilica
7. China’s Great Wall

While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student had not finished her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The girl replied, “Yes, a little. I couldn’t quite make up my mind because there were so many.”

The teacher said, “Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help.” The girl hesitated, then read, “I think the ‘Seven Wonders of the World’ are:

1. To See
2. To Hear
3. To Touch
4. To Taste
5. To Feel
6. To Laugh
7. And to Love.”

The room was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop. The things we overlook as simple and ordinary and that we take for granted are truly wondrous!

Fairy Tales

Posted by Argentum Vulgaris

“You know how when you were a little kid and you believed in fairy tales, that fantasy of what your life would be, white dress, prince charming who would carry you away to a castle on a hill. You would lie in bed at night and close your eyes and you had complete and utter faith. Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, Prince Charming, they were so close you could taste them, but eventually you grow up, one day you open your eyes and the fairy tale disappears. Most people turn to the things and people they can trust. But the thing is it's hard to let go of that fairy tale entirely cause almost everyone has that smallest bit of hope, of faith, that one day they will open their eyes and it will come true.”

Messengers From The Wilderness: Weeds

Posted by Argentum Vulgaris

by The DailyOm

"A plant is a weed only within a certain context; one person’s weed is another person’s wildflower. Simply expressed, a weed is any plant that grows where it isn’t wanted. Weeds are defined by their tendency to flourish at the expense of a gardener’s overall vision, and we tend to battle their presence in our yards. It is interesting to consider, though, that a plant is a weed only within a certain context, which is to say that one person’s weed is another person’s wildflower. Most of us have pulled at least one dandelion up by its roots and disposed of it in the interest of preserving the look of a perfect green lawn, yet the dandelion is good medicine, packed with healing properties and vitamin-rich leaves that are a delicious, spicy surprise in a summer salad.

In the wild, there is no such thing as a weed because the overall vision is in the hands of Mother Nature, who accommodates and incorporates all forms of life. In nature, balance is achieved over the long term, without the aid, or interference, of a human supervisor. While one plant may prevail over others for a certain period of time, eventually it will reach an apex and then it will naturally decline, allowing for other forms to be born and survive. This self-regulating realm was the first garden of our ancestors, who learned the art of agriculture from studying the forests and fields of the as yet uncultivated earth. In a sense, weeds are harbingers of this wildness, pushing their way into our well-ordered plots, undermining more delicate flora, and flourishing in spite of us.

The next time you see a weed, you might want to look deeply into its roots, discover its name, its habits, and its possible uses. Instead of seeing an unwanted intruder, you might see a healer offering its leaves for a medicinal tea or its flowers for a colorful salad. At the very least, if you look long enough, you will see a messenger from the wilderness of Mother Earth, reminding you that, even in the most carefully controlled garden, she cannot be completely ruled out."

Women are a Mystery

Posted by Argentum Vulgaris

A femme fatale

I have said it, I would wager that nearly all married men have said it along with probably the majority of single men.

"Women are a mystery" or "We don't understand women".

I therefore find it no surprise that one of the greatest contemporary minds on this planet has also said it.

Stephen Hawking admits he finds women 'a complete mystery'

Stephen Hawking
Physicist who has grappled with cosmic inflation and a quantum theory of gravity says he is baffled by women

His career has shed light on the secrets of the universe, from the nature of space-time to the workings of black holes, but there is one conundrum that still baffles the world's most famous scientist.

In an interview to mark his 70th birthday this weekend, Stephen Hawking, the former Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge University, admitted he spent most of the day thinking about women. "They are," he said "a complete mystery."

Now in the light of that statement I can only conclude, that if he finds them baffling, what hope do mere mortals like you and I have in achieving an understanding of the feminine psyche.

I put it to you... Not even if Hell freezes over.

Waikuku School where kids can be kids

Posted by Argentum Vulgaris

Old-fashioned values, traditional play-time technique
Parents fed up with over- zealous health and safety rules and politically correct playgrounds are clambering to send their children to a North Canterbury school which has placed an emphasis on "letting kids be kids and letting them play."

Waikuku School has witnessed a roll explosion as principal Roger Hornblow's relaxed teaching style has captured the imagination of local families.

The experienced headmaster jokingly describes his domain as: 'The anti-safe school: We run with scissors.'

Of course, the kids don't run with sharp instruments, but Waikuku refuses to wrap kids in cotton wool.

Instead, the school has returned to old-fashioned values and traditional play-time techniques and games.

A giant macrocarpa hedge that wraps around the school's rear boundary has been renamed, 'Man Land' - and has been opened up for the children to play in and to fire their imagination.

The youngsters are also challenged by the principal to ride a unicycle around the concrete netball court.

And if they manage it, he buys them morning tea.

They have attempted to equal the high-jump world record using a mini-trampoline and a fat mat.

Kids snorkel lakes searching for sunken boats, tee-off at the local golf driving range, go paint-balling, and fill the school swimming pool with litres of dishwashing liquid for massive foam parties.

For Mr Hornblow, who joined the school in 2008 amidst a collapsing roll and an endemic behaviour problem, allowing pupils to have fun is critical to their self development and learning.

He said: "The whole thing about primary school is making memories. It's central to the whole thing.

"If your kids go home from school saying 'school sucks', then your school probably does suck.

"We try hard to get kids to establish their own boundaries and let kids be kids and letting them play.

This is what I have been saying for years. At last a man with balls, balls enough to fly in the face of all this politically correct bullshit.

Kids have to skin their knees and bleed, if they don't, they don't know it hurts; it's all a part of growing up.
